Miracle fruit is a tropical west African plant whose small red fruit has a very unusual property. After eating one miracle fruit, sour fruits will instantly taste sweet. The marvelous aroma and inherent sweetness remains but the sourness is almost completely covered. The effect lasts an hour or two. The miracle fruit is a remarkable natural sweetener.
The abiu (Pouteria caimito) is a native fruit crop to the warm and moist lowlands of South America and can be found growing wild throughout much of Amazonia , it also thrives in warm subtropical and tropical conditions. Light yellow and less pointed at the end than the Yellow Sapote, the Abiu has caramel flavoured flesh and it is sometimes used to flavour ice cream and make other desserts, which is translucent and is rich in vitamins A, B2 and C. It is also a rich source of energy and fibre.
In Brazil the pulp from the plant is used medicinally, to relieve coughs and bronchitis. Of course, most people love the fruit's flavour, which is enhanced when eaten slightly chilled. Cut in half and scoop out the flesh with a spoon and enjoy!
The native is southern Brazil. Takes long time to begin flowering after potting as a bonsai.
It blooms about two times a year in Taiwan. The flower has delicate white petals with stamens and comes in clusters on the trunk, large branches and exposed roots. The tree begins to bear fruit when it is 5 to 7 years old. Its edible purple berries are globular shaped, 3/4" to 1 1/2" in diameter, develops very quickly; from blooms to ripe fruit about three weeks. It is good to eat fresh. Available in nurseries in the warmer climates and from bonsai specialty growers.
This ancient spice is a popular flavoring in many cuisines, and is especially noted for its delectable aroma. There are many species of cinnamon, but Taiwan cinnamom are the source for medicinal cinnamon bark remedies used in Chinese traditional medicine.
